Crimson Tide football has become synonymous with good defense, and Alabama fans owe a lot of that to defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Smart, a former All-SEC defensive back at Georgia, comes by his defensive credentials honestly. Formerly a safeties coach with the Miami Dolphins, Smart followed Dolphins Coach Nick Saban to Tuscaloosa in 2007.
Working under one of the best defensive minds in the college game, Smart has flourished, and his defense is a big reason why the Crimson Tide finished the regular season undefeated. Smart's defense entered the SEC Championship game with Florida second nationally in scoring defense, third in total defense and leading the nation in pass efficiency defense.
Smart has also shown his ability to tutor defensive backs, with Alabama's Mark Barron tied for fourth in the country with seven interceptions.
